WORLD CYBER GAMES – GAME ON.

When the World Cyber Games, often referred to as the World Cup of esports, came to Germany in 2008, ROBOT was commissioned by the Korean organizers and the city of Cologne to develop a communications strategy capable of turning the event into a major public attraction.

The challenge was significant. The target audience was not only highly media-savvy but also faced an overwhelming number of competing entertainment options. In and around Cologne, trade fairs, cultural events, concerts, and exhibitions constantly compete for attention. The positioning therefore had to be bold, highly visible, and impossible to ignore.

ROBOT developed a campaign that brought iconic elements of gaming culture into a local urban context, creating an immediate connection between the event and the city itself. The integrated communications package included newspaper advertising, city-light posters, large-format outdoor media, radio spots, online activities, and street promotions, all designed to capture attention and engage both dedicated gamers and the broader public.

The results exceeded all expectations. The campaign generated widespread awareness, significant media attention, and ultimately helped deliver a new attendance record. More than 58,000 visitors attended the event, surpassing the organizer’s target by 100 percent and establishing the World Cyber Games as one of the most successful esports events ever held in Germany
